Tackle Football

The Hawks proudly wear the powder blue uniform and have represented the town of Hammonton since 1958. The Hawks organization aims to inspire the youth of Hammonton High School and its sending districts to practice good sportsmanship and physical fitness. To this end, the specific purposes of this team are to:

  • Teach football fundamentals and clean play, and better prepare youth who may choose to participate in high school football.

To ensure the safety of the children in our community, we play in a hybrid weighted league with the following limits:

  • Varsity: 180 lbs – 7th and 8th grade
  • JV: 150 lbs – 5th and 6th grade
  • Peewee: 120 lbs – 3rd and 4th grade
  • Taxi: 100 lbs – 1st and 2nd grade

Beginning in September 2024, there will be a tackle-to-tackle rule (T2T) which allows 3 players, clearly marked, to play between the tackles without a weight limit. These players must be in a three or four-point stance and are not permitted to advance the ball. Taxi is excluded from T2T, and weight limits apply to all players on the field during Taxi games.

Practice begins the 2nd week of August, and the preseason lasts through Labor Day, with practices held at William T. Capella Field Monday-Friday between 5:45 PM and 8:00 PM. The preseason is a test for the young men and women who come through our program. Not only do they learn the game of football, but they also find the meaning of team, discipline, commitment, adversity, and brotherhood/sisterhood. Many successful men and women in the community credit the Hawks organization for instilling these character traits in them from an early age.

Games are played on Saturday afternoon/evening and consist of both home and away games during the months of September and October. Weeks 1 and 2 of November are dedicated to the playoffs. Upon the start of the school year, practices are held Tuesday-Thursday, with an early Saturday morning walk-through with limited equipment.

Hawks players are encouraged to wear their game jerseys to school on Fridays. This is symbolic and represents the hard work invested in the preseason.

“Football is like life. It requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice, dedication, and respect for authority.” - Vince Lombardi
